Frog Kicks

The final chapter in kicks…well for now anyway …

The Modified Frog Kick is perhaps the easiest way to motor around reefs, wrecks and swimming pools. It is easy on the gas tank (AKA SCUBA cylinder) and assists in great buoyancy control. When done properly and with gentleness, it is a good kick inside overhead environments and other areas where silt is a concern. It will also help keep the long fins off of the fragile life underneath you.

The Kick is performed by starting out in a relaxed neutral position, then simultaneously drawing up knees while causing your heals to approach your cute bottom (or the bottom of your gas tank for those who are concerned about being politically correct. … not a big concern of mineJ).  In this process let your knees take a natural direction apart from each other. You can let your feet rotate so the tops of your feet are heading outwards.  Easy enough, now you are in the correct position to propel your cute bottom forward. Bring your knees & legs together allowing the top of your feet to come together as if they were going to slap into each other. It is the top of the fin which is propelling you forward.

A good variation of this is to simply minimize the entire process emphasizing the foot action. I use this approach on entire dives, it is one reason I can do 80 foot dives for 90 minutes on a single 80. (Yes it is a “Deco”dive, and no don’t try it at home. Your tub is not deep enough! Unless of course you have the proper training and certifications.)
All in all, the Frog Kick is a very easy and comfortable kick which will serve you in nearly any circumstance.

Next time I think I will talk about “The Zen of Diving” …. Maybe!
